Painter, illustrator, cartoonist
Daughter of the Jewish journalist who founded the newspaper Folksblat in Uruguay, Orzuj was trained at the National School of Fine Arts in Montevideo, specializing in the Artigas Teachers Institute and Torres García Workshop, choosing to be a cartoonist, graphic humorist and painter. She has been an art teacher and painter.
In 1977 she began her international activity at the invitation of Robert La Palme, director of the Montreal Humor Pavilion, and since 1988 she has been the editor of the international humor magazine Wittyworld from Montevideo. In addition, among other activities of hers, the foundation in 1994 of the “International Salon of Graphic Humor for Women” stands out, a pioneer at the time.
Cartoon Archiv publishes his cartoons in Germany, but his work has also been reproduced in publications in Spain, Italy, England, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Israel and Belgium. She has obtained more than forty national and international recognitions for her works, highlighting the fact that she has usually defended the position of women in society and in culture with her drawings and paintings.
His work is represented at the OAS Art Museum in Washington DC –where he held his first international individual exhibition–; at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico; at the Caricature Museum of Tolentino, Italy; at the Wilhelm Bush Museum, located in Hannover, Germany; at the Zemun Caricatura Museum located in the former Yugoslavia; in the Californian Cartoon Art Museum, among others. There is a documentary about her art entitled Resplandor de la memoria, by filmmaker Mateo Etchegoyhen, on the occasion of fifty years of artistic action and thirty years as graphic humorist of the Uruguayan artist.
In Spain, his book History of Graphic Humor in Uruguay has been published by Editorial Milenio / Universidad de Alcalà.
He belongs to the federation of European humorists, FECO, and CAT (Cartoonists Against Terrorism).
