Garzon Jaime

Bogota, Colombia

24.10.1960 – 13.08.1999

Journalist, comedian, cartoonist

Jaime Garzon was born on October 24, 1960 in Bogota. He studied law at the National University of Colombia, but became interested in working on television and dropped out. From 1988 to 1990 he was the mayor of Sumapaz (district of the capital of Bogota) in the administration of Bogota Mayor Andres Pastrana, and from 1990 to 1994 he was engaged in social work. In the 1990s, Jaime was popular on Colombian television because of his political satire on the leaders of drug cartels, as well as the commanders of paramilitary organizations of the left and right. In addition to his work on television, he acted several times as a negotiator with FARC rebels in the process of releasing hostages they had taken. On August 13, 1999, Jaime Garzon was killed by hitmen in his car in Bogota, he was shot 5 times. Initially, it was suggested that rebels from the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, who did it on the orders of Carlos Castagno, were behind the murder. The murder of the satirist caused a huge public outcry in Colombia, as the journalist was shot not because of his political views, but because of his jokes on television. In 2015, Colombian General Jorge Enrique Mora made a statement that the Medellin cocaine cartel was behind Garzon’s murder.

On February 5, 2021, the court confirmed the 26-year sentence of former DAS deputy director Jose Miguel Narvaez for the murder of Jaime Garzon after more than 21 years of committing the crime.
